Bramcote Hills Rise – Nottingham

The Challenge

Existing design included a concrete attenuation tank, no SuDS treatment and an adoptable foul & surface water pumping station, as well as a restricted discharge into a highway drain.

Our Approach

  • Investigation of potential gravity outfalls and engagement with network solutions to agree a suitably revised discharge rate.
  • Assessment and introduction of pond with sediment forebays and permanent pools to provide treatment and attenuation volume.
  • Earthworks analysis to establish the impact of a gravity solution, including road geometry.
  • Coordination with S278 consultant to establish appropriate S38 / S278 distribution.

Results

  • Gravity drainage solution with visual SuDS and outfall to main sewer.
  • Removal of concrete tank (supply and install quote was in the region of £1M).
  • Removal of adoptable surface and foul water pumping station, including the ongoing maintenance risk for statutory authority and homeowners.
  • Reduced environmental impact / carbon footprint.

Lessons Learned

Value engineering opportunities should not be overlooked regardless of the project stage. By delivering this scheme via a gravity solution it removes risk to the developer, a better aesthetic that requires no compound and the maintenance to the statutory authority is improved.
